Area
Patrols (Community Policing)
Area patrols
are initiated by a road patrol member when
visiting a specific township, village, hamlet or area of Steuben
County. This
patrol is completed after a minimum of 20 minutes in the general
community
area. This type patrol is used to interact with citizens of the
community, or
checking on the status of the area. Generally, a patrol should park or
patrol
the area with a specific emphasis on public relations and interaction
with
citizens.
When a member
begins an area patrol, he advises Dispatch of
his area and the 10-23 time of the patrol. A CR number is assigned by
Dispatch.
Upon completion of the patrol, Dispatch is advised by 10-24, 10-8 and
the CR
number is then completed by Dispatch.
Semi-annually,
the towns, villages and hamlets are advised
by the Sheriff of the number of Community policing patrols completed
for their
area. This allows town and village governments to see, first hand, the
amount
of policing being provided by the Sheriff s Office.
