On
Sunday, February 4, 2007 at approximately 3:00 pm, 911 dispatched the
Steuben
County Sheriff’s Office to a call of an unresponsive 12-year-old on
Route 53 in
the Town of Prattsburgh. Corporal Rich
Lock arrived at the residence on State Route 53 and upon entry observed
a
12-year-old male subject collapsed on his bedroom floor and his mother
was
doing CPR. Cpl. Lock checked the victim
and ascertained he was unresponsive, had no pulse or breathing. He immediately attached the electrodes on
his Automated External Defibrillator and the instrument indicated a
shock was
needed to restore the victim’s heart rhythm as he was in a Ventricular
Fibrillation. If the AED shock were not
immediately administered, the Ventricular Fibrillation rhythm would
quickly
deteriorate eventually causing death. Cpl.
Lock shocked the victim as indicated and the heart
return to a
normal Sinus Rhythm. A few minutes
later the victims heart rhythm changed back to Ventricular Fibrillation
necessitating Cpl. Lock to administer a second shock as indicated by
the
AED. The victim's heart returned to a
normal Sinus rhythm and the victim was further treated and transported
by Rural
Metro and Prattsburgh Ambulance to Ira Davenport Hospital.
The 12-year-old was further transported to
Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for further treatment.
