A Safety Tip
from the
Steuben County
Office of Emergency
Services
“In Case of Extremely
Cold Weather”
The
Steuben County
Office of Emergency Services suggests the following information to
protect
area residents during this period of extremely cold weather.
-
Consider
limiting
outdoor activities.
-
If you
must venture
out, dress in layers and wear a hat to reduce heat loss.
-
Cold
weather puts
an extra strain on your body particularly the elderly, small children
and
those with special needs.
-
When
traveling in
a vehicle make sure your car is equipped with “Survival Gear,” like
blankets,
a shovel, flashlight and quick energy food. Keep your gas tank
full
to prevent gasline freeze-up.
-
In the
event of a
power failure keep warm by adding extra layers of clothing and by
closing
off rooms in your home you don’t use.
-
Use
only safe sources
of alternative heating, keeping all flammable materials at least 3 feet
away from any heat source. Never leave small children unattended
in a room with an alternative heat source.
-
Be
aware of the signs
and symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The colorless,
odorless
gas can be produced by such common items as automotive exhaust, home
heating
symptoms, and obstructed chimneys. Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide
poisoning
include sleepiness, headaches, and dizziness.
Extremely
cold weather
with wind chill conditions can severely impact the unprepared.
Make
sure you prepare yourself and your family for the dangers of cold
weather. |
