Heavy
rains and
unexpected spring thaws can cause a threat of flooding and flash floods
in our area. The Steuben County Office of Emergency Services
offers
the following guidelines to protect you and your family from the
dangers
of flooding.
- If
an evacuation is ordered, leave early enough to avoid being stranded on
flooded roadways.
- Monitor
NOAA weather radio, local television and radio stations for flood and
flash
flood watches, warnings, advisories, or statements.
- Learn
the safest route from your home or business to higher ground and
safety in case flooding occurs.
- Make
sure your vehicle has enough fuel.
- Develop
and practice a "family escape plan" and identify a meeting
place
in case family members become separated.
- Never
cross-flooded roadways; flood waters are extremely fast flowing,
forceful, and unpredictable. Compact cars can become buoyant with
as little as 5 inches of water above the floorboard, just a few more
inches
will float a larger vehicle.
- Always
use caution while driving on escape routes, watch for washed out
roads, earth slides, and downed trees or power lines.
- Remember
to make plans for pets. Emergency shelters will not allow pets.
- Keep
a portable radio, emergency cooking equipment, flashlights in
working
order, extra batteries, additional cash and prescription medications
handy.
- Disconnect
electrical appliances. Do not touch them if you are
wet
or standing in water.
- Never
try to
walk, swim, or drive through swift water. If you come upon
floodwaters,
stop! Turn around and go another way.
