The Steuben
County rain and snow monitoring program is operated by the Office of
Emergency
Services. This group of dedicated citizen volunteers collect
routine,
daily rainfall and snowfall data, and also monitors the weather during
high
impact events such as heavy rainfall, snowfall, severe weather or
flooding. This
information is called into the Steuben County Emergency Services Office
or
National Weather Service in order to better document rain, snow and
severe
weather in our County. This program subsequently assists the
County, DEC,
Environmental Emergency Services Inc. and National Weather Service in
documenting the amount of rain and snow that falls in our County
helping to
determine the severe nature of a particular storm or rainfall in
a month
or year. This helps us to identify trends in rainfall and snow
during any
given year. Our program has
worked independently for years and currently we are in the beginning
stages of
working in partnership with the "Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and
Snow" (CoCoRaHS) Network to collect, display and archive the data our
volunteers provide. This new system will allow more people to
access our
data in a more immediate format than what we currently have. |
