HENRY
L. DRUMMER (1866-1934)
Canandaigua
Native – moved to Bath in 1882 – secured an appointment as Florist at
the New
York State Soldiers & Sailors’ Home, becoming Superintendent of the
Grounds
for 48 years. Originator of Children’s Exhibition at the Steuben County
Fair. Attempted to start an
Agricultural and Horticultural School in Bath NY. Laid out the gardens
and
grounds at the Home and started the National Cemetery, insuring every
deceased
veteran had flowers provided at their funeral and hospital patients
were
supplied with fresh flowers in their wards.
In a speech by Professor Roberts, Director of Cornell
University, he
cited “Steuben County had, under Mr. Drummer’s inspiration, done more
in the
line of Nature Study work than any other County in this state.”
