RECREATIONAL/HEALTHY ACTIVITIES

Social, recreational, educational, cultural, and wellness opportunities for seniors are important to remaining healthy, active and vital. It is the intent of the Steuben County Office for the Aging to provide information about resources accessible to seniors within our community. The listing below includes some of the possibilities. Some may require a fee or have a residency requirement.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

School districts provide on-going adult education courses in subject areas ranging from woodworking to computer classes. Contact your local school for more  information. Seniors are welcome to continue their education through area colleges and a host of other programs.

Phoenix Project

A special new initiative of Corning Community College to provide educational opportunities for individuals age 50 plus. The program will offer both credit and non-credit course work presented in traditional and non-traditional classes, workshops, and seminars. The intent is to provide reasonably priced continuing education with subject matter of interest to the senior population.

ELDERHOSTEL

Elderhostel programs offer those over age 60 a combination of recreational and educational activities, and a chance to make new friends and foster new interests. The week-long programs, held locally, as well as across the country and abroad, may include meals, housing and enrollment in classes. Commuters are also welcome. SENIOR CENTERS

Senior Centers offer a wide range of activities to meet the needs and interests of older residents within our community. While programs vary at different sites, they typically include organized games, card clubs, educational presentations, arts and crafts, health screenings, tax assistance, and cultural enrichment.

SENIOR CLUBS
Senior Citizen Clubs generally hold monthly meetings, often a dinner or luncheon meeting with a program. Many plan and schedule other events such as day trips and special events.

SPECIAL EVENTS

A variety of special events, sponsored in part by the Steuben County Office for the Aging and/or Steuben County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, are offered including:
 

  • Health Fairs - Senior health fairs are held in different parts of the county through out the year. Available at the fairs are free screenings, demonstrations, health product samples, and information from health service providers.
  • The Senior Citizen Prom - Held the first Saturday in May at Haverling High School, 7:00 to 10:30 pm. Live music, dancing, refreshments, door prizes, and souvenir photos. Open to all seniors throughout the county. It is recommended that tickets be purchased ahead of time.
  • The Senior Forum - Held in Bath at the First Presbyterian Church, towards the end of September. The Forum hosts a number of workshops which run the gamet from informational, educational, cultural, to fun. The Office for the Aging holds its annual public hearing during the first part of the day. The event finishes with a noon luncheon and some live entertainment. The Forum is open to all Steuben County seniors, call for reservations.

TOWN RECREATION PROGRAMS

The Village and the Town of Bath Adult Recreation
Co-sponsored by the Village and the Town of Bath.
The Bath Recreation program offers day trips to seniors. Ten trips a year are scheduled to take place throughout March to December. Sign-up is held between 8:00 to 8:30 am on the Friday before each scheduled trip date. This is on a first come first served basis at the Municipal building in Bath.  All participants must be a resident of either the Town or Village of Bath and at least 60 years old.

Town of Erwin Senior Recreation
Sponsored by the Village of Erwin
The Town of Erwin Senior Center offers day trips and recreational activities to seniors. Ten to twelve trips are scheduled throughout the year. Sign-up is on a first come first served basis, held from 1 to 2 pm on the days listed at the at the Erwin Town Hall Senior Center.  All participants must be a resident of the Town of Erwin and at least 60 years old.
