The Steuben County Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance, construction, and snowplowing of 678 miles of County roads and 190 County bridges. The County Public Works Department also builds and maintains 141 bridges on Town and Village roads. County roads connect important points in the County and serve as feeder roads to the State highway system.
Shared Equipment
County, Towns, NYSDEC, NYSDOT and BOCES: dozers, trucks, crushers, lowboy, track excavators, loaders, shoulder widener, chip seal machine.
Schuyler County:  Loans its jersey spreader, dozer operator and message boards to Steuben DPW.
BOCES:  provides equipment to the Towns and County.

Steuben County Soil & Water Conservation Service
Works with County DPW, Towns, and NYSDEC to clean creeks.  The gravel is used to build roads.  
County DPW works with S&WCS to place erosion control rip rap and rock spurs in County streams. DPW provides an operator and repair services for a Soil & Water Conservation Services track hoe.  

Flood Repair
County and Town crews help each other with equipment and personnel to repair flood damage.

Snowplowing
Towns plow 200 miles of County road under a per mile per year payment contract.  
County plows 100 miles of State roads under a per mile per year payment contract.

Mowing
Towns mow 160 miles of County roads under a per mile payment contract.

Bridge Construction
County designs, builds and maintains all Town bridges longer than 20 ft.  The Towns maintain the driving surface of these 142 bridges.  
County engineering and construction departments advise Towns on small bridge and road project designs.

Chip Seal Roads
County crews chip seal some Town roads.  

Guide Rail
County crews install guide rail for Towns.

Signs
County crews lay out and erect signs for Towns.

Salt Storage Barns
County DPW shared in cost of building four Town salt storage barns used for Town/County plowing.

Mobile Work Program
Steuben County DPW supervisors pick up welfare recipients at their homes. The crews work on County, City, Town, Village and non-for-profit agency projects.

KANAKADEA PARK
Kanakadea Park is located near Hornell on County Route 66. It has picnic pavilions, overnight camping, basketball & volleyball courts, hiking, a playground and a 110 acre lake. A spur trail connects Kanakadea Park to the Finger Lakes Trail.

BIRDSEYE HOLLOW PARK

Birdseye Hollow Park is located on CR 96 in the town of Bradford. It offers fishing, picnicking, nature trails and a picnic pavilion. It has an observation deck that extends out into a 70 acre pond. The Finger Lakes Trail runs through Birdseye Hollow Park.

HARLEY MAYO PARK AT BOYD'S CORNERS

Harley Mayo Park at Boyd's Corners is located in the town of Cameron on County Route 123. Picnic pavilions, a playground, a basketball court and hiking trails make it a nice place for family gatherings.

HORNBY PARK

Hornby Park is located on Kerrick Hollow Road in the Town of Hornby just off State Route 414. Playground equipment, picnic pavilions and hiking trails make this a nice place for family gatherings.

STEUBEN COUNTY SOLID WASTE DIVISION

Landfills and Transfer Stations

Steuben County developed a county-wide landfill and transfer station system in the 1970's. The system includes one municipal landfill and three transfer stations.

The Bath Landfill is located on Turnpike Road just off of County Route 15, Knight Settlement Road. The landfill accepts residential, commercial, industrial and Construction & Demolition waste.

The Erwin Transfer Station is located south of Gang Mills on State Route 417.
The Hornell Transfer Station is on County Route 64 off State Route 21.
The Wayland Transfer Station is on Deiter Road off State Route 63.

Recycling
Steuben County accepts many recyclable materials. Most are at no charge. These are accepted at the Bath Landfill and the three Transfer Stations.
