NEW
YORK STATE PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION
Certain
veterans
who served during a wartime period, may be eligible for the New York
State
Property Tax exemption. A copy of discharge is required, and it is
suggested
that veterans contact the local tax assessor's office in the area in
which
they reside, to first determine their eligibility. The Veterans Service
Agency also assists those veterans in obtaining any required
documentation
that is needed, such as discharge, service in combat area, verifying
disability
pensions, etc.

MEDICAL
CARE
Hospital
Care is
available to veterans who may be in need of treatment or
hospitalization.
There are certain admission rules or criteria to be met under current
Veterans
Administration Regulations and a copy of a discharge is required.

DISCHARGE
RECORDS
The
Veterans Service
Agency assists all recently discharged veterans, as well as other
veterans,
in filing their discharge records and placing them on file in the
Steuben
County Clerk's Office for safe keeping. This is an important document,
because veterans are not eligible to file for any benefits unless they
have a copy. The County Clerk's Office will certify the original
discharge
at no charge to either the veteran's spouse or next of kin.

SERVICE-CONNECTED
DISABILITY COMPENSATION
Service-connected
disability compensation is available for those veterans either injured
in
combat or disabled as a result of injury while in the performance of
their
official duties

NON-SERVICE
CONNECTED PENSIONS
Non-service
connected
pensions are for older veterans or those who are on limited income and
unemployable because of a disability. Disability must be verified and
income
limitations may also apply. Surviving spouses of veterans may also be
eligible
for pension, depending on their income.

DIC
Dependency
and Indemnity Compensation
may be paid to spouses of veterans. In this case, income limitations do
not apply, but it must be proven that the veteran died as a direct
result
of a service-related injury or disability for which compensation was
received
at the time of death.

BURIAL
AND HEADSTONE BENEFITS
Burial
benefits may be paid to certain veterans, who at time of death, were
receiving Compensation, Pension or expired in a Department of Vetarans
Affairs facility or a contract facility. Headstones and or grave
markers are available, when buried in a private cemetery. Plots can not
be reserved in advance, but the family may apply for one at the time of
death, when burial is in a national cemetery.

CLAIMS
Veterans
or their
families may be entitled to Veterans Administration Insurance claims.
All
insurance records are maintained in the Central office in Philadelphia

G.I.
HOME LOAN GUARANTY
Applications
for
the G.I. Home Loan Guaranty and Certificate of Eligibility may also be
applied for through the Veterans Service Agency. A copy of discharge or
DD Form 214 is required.

BENEFITS
Education
and training
are available to eligible veterans, with a discharge or copy of DD Form 214.

BLIND
ANNUITY PENSION
A New
York State
Blind Annuity is available for veterans. There are certain rules and
criteria
that must be met and veterans should have copy of discharge or DD Form
214
upon
application.

CIVIL
SERVICE Exam Credits
For
Federal Exams:
A ten-point preference is given for eligible disabled veterans in
competitive
exams only. Certain requirements are waived and special priority is
given
in certain job categories. Five-point preference is given for wartime
veterans
honorably discharged.
For
State and
Local Exams: Ten-point additional credit preference is given toward the
original appointment, for disabled wartime veterans; five-points for
wartime
service; and two and one half points for competitive promotional exams.

MILITARY
AND PERSONAL RECORDS
The
Veterans Service
Agency can also assist veterans in securing their military records, as
well as birth, marriage and death certificates for their dependents.

MEDALS
AND AWARDS
Applications
for
medals or awards may also be secured through the Veterans Service
Agency.
A copy of discharge is required, as well as documentation, where
necessary,
that medals or awards applied for were earned by the veterans.

VETERANS
ADMINISTRATION
Accredited
Representatives
County
veterans
Service Officers are accredited by the United States Department of
Veterans
Affairs(VA), and as such are authorized to present claims for further
development,
institute appeals from VA decisions and follow through to final
disposition
with representatives at the VA’s Washington D.C. headquarters. As an
accredited
representative, the County Veterans Service Office offers a
personalized
service not available from other sources. Each case is based on its
own merits.
