Voter Information

Changing Parties.  Many voters wish to switch parties just before an election.  In New York State you will not be able to do this.  New York has a law that prevents voters from switching parties just before a Primary Election.  The reason is to keep voters from switching parties for the sole purpose of affecting election results in an opposing political party’s Primary.  The law keeps enrollment changes from happening until seven days after the November General Election.  You may submit the paperwork to change parties at any time, it just won’t be effective until November.

Courts support this law, and it applies to ALL elections in New York.

If you are a first-time registrant in Steuben County you may choose your party at any time before the regular registration cutoff dates.
