Avoiding Scams-A Consumer Guide

The Steuben County Sheriff's Office works cooperatively with the NYS Department of State, the FBI and local financial institutions to investigate and document reported fraud and scams.  The Steuben County Sheriff's Office provides free training classes to community groups on techniques to avoid and report scams and identity theft, both actual and attempted.  To schedule a class for your group, please call 607 622-3930 or email Millions of dollars each year leave our economy to overseas criminal recipients due to scams and fraud. 


1.  If you receive an offer that seems too good to be true, it probably is. 

2.  If you receive an offer of payment from a group or area you have no ties to, it is probably a scam. 

3.  If you receive an unsolicited request for money via a wire transfer service, it is probably a scam.  

4.  If you receive a call or email asking you to update or verify your password or security questions for your bank accounts, it is probably a scam.
